Pusong Minero, PMSEA’s corps of “A Heart to Serve… A Heart to Save Lives… volunteer-miners/mining companies is
once again at the forefront of disaster and relief operations in areas badly affected by Typhoon Odette. Apex Mining Co., Inc, and its subsidiary Itogon-Suyoc Resources, Inc. (ISRI), under its Apex Cares and ISI Cares programs, immediately sent OPLAN TARANG CERIERTs (emergency response teams) to CARAGA and Cebu, bringing with them essentials such as food packs, bottled water, and blankets. The company also donated fuel to power generators and tarpaulins for temporary shelters.
Apex President and CEO Luis R. Sarmiento, ASEAN Eng., says mining companies, regardless of areas of operation, always band together and help, sharing their expertise, know-how and equipment in disaster relief operations. “It doesn’t matter where we are; we will go where we are needed,” he says. Sarmiento is also the Pusong Minero coordinator of PMSEA.
PMSEA’s Typhoon Odette aid is a multiorganization collaboration with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (GB), PMA Maringal
Class of 1988, PMA Sambisig Class of 1991, Davao De Oro Police Provincial Office, Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao, the Eastern Rizal Miners Association, the Mindanao Association of Mining Engineers and the Alliance of Responsible Miners of Region XI.
To date, aside from Apex and ISI, other PMSEA members like the Platinum Group Metals Corp, and Teresa Marble have assisted in the relief operations.
